Toto, we’re not in Indiana anymore.
While grabbing a mid-afternoon brew at Eppler’s, I heard the megaphone. As I stepped onto the sidewalk, I was suddenly surrounded by many my own age and those well into their seventies. Many were masked, few wore suits, some only shoes — all carried a message.
Spenser Querry, a native of Gas City, finds crabs washed up along the Pacific shore at Ocean Beach. Querry made his way to San Francisco via Muncie to study and work on films at The Academy of Art University.
Now, I’ve been missing the Pacific and whistling The Avett Brothers all the livelong day.
Too excited to keep my eyes open!
Sorry for the cheese, but that’s me and my idol, Willie “Say Hey Kid” Mays. Growing up in Northwest Indiana, a region where families live and breathe the diamond’s dirt, he was always my inspiration as a center fielder.
Thanks for the motivation, and enjoy your 80th, kiddo. I would give anything to be back in San Fran and see you on that diamond tonight.
The weather has been terrible absolutely nasty since I arrived. There was even a tornado the first day we ventured out! (We didn’t know about it until the computer told us so once we were back indoors.)
Battling the wind and rain has been fun, though. I was even able to stop and admire the sights along the SF-Oakland Bay and in Chinatown.

The San Francisco Fire Boat House at Embarcadero + Harrison was built in 1915. Those are raindrops around the flagpole, not snow (thank goodness).

The sun started to peak out over the Bay Bridge for a few minutes on Saturday.
Hopefully, today’s photos will come back bright and sunny — There’s a 90% chance of rain, but it’s beautiful right meow.
In Anticipation of Californication: A Musical Celebration
Because, of course, I would.
Sorry Katy, Mat, and that band that sings that song you know from The OC’s invitations must have been lost in the mail.
- Joni Mitchell, because “I’m going to see the folks I dig.”
- The Decemberists, The Decemberists, The Decemberists
- Jolie Holland (I wish I could find a better version of this. She’s so cute! Thank goodness her parents put all that pressure on her by naming her “Pretty.”)
- The Mamas + The Papas + The Dancers
- Just a dab, but worth the mention, because they’re: The Beatles
- Journey
- Ramones
- Green Day, because I’m a total product of my generation. E.g., I just used “total” + Green Day” in the same fragment.
- Yes, I like love them: Vampire Weekend. Judge away.
- 2Pac + Dre + Chris – “Can you dig it, maaane?!”
- B.I.G.
I know, I know – you’ve joined in with Local H (Heyo, Chicago!) by now.
Props to PJ for trying. I’m sorry. When you go that high, I fall into nightmares so deep, even Alice couldn’t get out.
I wish I could have found a decent version of Hot Hot Heat’s Christmas Day in the Sun. I’ll just save this for my return. Okay, I couldn’t save it – I just had to share those curls!
Until tomorrow, I’ll be gone to Carolina California in my mind.
The official countdown starts today. In seven days, I will be here:
That will be me, only I’ll be wearing a cardigan. I just might be sailing that boat instead, too.
I will be riding buses (!) + bikes (!!) + hopefully, nabbing a few interviews!!!Here goes SOMETHING!
